Rantakartano central area will be an independent housing area formed by seven new blocks.
The blocks define a distinct area with two different scales relating to the surrounding city. In the middle of these blocks a functional heart of the area is formed by a series of pedestrian streets and plazas, forming a new link between the old city and the lake shore.

On top of the base level the light towers erect. Their height is related to the highest buildings in the old city and their appearance is light and translucent – like lanterns on a wooden deck. The apartments always open to at least three directions, providing views of the city, the lake and the park.

On the lake side, the path leading to the water is bordered by sports fields, which will be connected to the already existing adjacent sports park.

Wooden houses / Public Buildings

The base level of the blocks consists of wooden houses of two to three floors. Each horizontal block is divided vertically into narrow houses, introducing the human scale. The street level inhabits cafés, shops, galleries and workshops, while upper levels are apartments.

New public buildings are placed at both ends of the area. On the city side, the Paasikivi square is redefined by a new art museum. Together with the existing concert hall and a historical museum the plaza becomes a cultural center of activity. The old bus station from the functionalist era will be converted into a cultural center.

Other Projects / Villa Hartela, Lieto, Wooden Housing Area

The Hartela villa area is a contemporary interpretation of traditional Finnish areas of wooden villas and mansion houses. The villas house four to five apartments, all with private gardens. The new area becomes a village-like milieu. We aimed to develop a modern vocabulary and new interpretations for nostalgic verandas, terraces and gardens. The area is a combination of private housing and dense communal housing.
The wooden villas open towards their own gardens. The narrow streets are bordered by garden fences, small scale storages and parking garages.
The apartments vary in size from 75 to 120 m² and their material palette consists of wood, steel and glass.

Other Projects / Arola, Hirvensalo, Turku

This residential area is located in Hirvensalo, Turku. It consists of houses in a variety of typologies, ranging from single family houses to combinations of multi storey blocks and town house flats. In the materialisation of the houses, wood plays a leading role.

Other Projects / New Lighting Design For Tikkurila City Center, Vantaa

In co-operation with artists Tarja Ervasti and Ilkka Volanen
The task was to find an architecture and art based solution for currently (not) existing city centre. By using lights a hierarchy of boundaries, vegetation, streets and surfaces was created. The most central pedestrian route is designed to light up poetically according to seasonal events. The walkway is given the role of the main “vessel” it deserves. The lighting systems of Tikkurila city centre will be realized according to this set principles.
